For the past few days I’ve been struggling with system performance only to find that one of my flippin’ Sidebar Gadgets was maxing out the svchost.exe process. I had svchost.exe running at almost 1.6GB of memory!
The Gadget(s) giving me the problems were not any of the standard Microsoft Gadgets that ship with Windows Vista - which seem to be the only Gadgets I can run these days without borking up my system.
If you develop Sidebar Gadgets - PLEASE test your Gadgets! Put them through rigorous testing before submitting them to the Windows Live Gallery. Have a friend or two test your Gadget for a few days to a week or something.
And Microsoft - shame on you for allowing Gadgets that cause system performance issues to get on Windows Live Gallery. There should be some sort of quality bar set for these Gadgets before consumers download and install them onto Windows Sidebar. These performance issues aren’t being blamed on those Gadget developers but instead contribute to the ongoing “Windows Vista sucks cause it makes my PC do fruity things” argument that affects Microsoft’s image. PC’s are doing fruity things while running Windows Vista because it seems people have forgotten how to write good software (it seems NVIDIA *still* can’t get their damn drivers right) - its not Windows Vista. Hell I could have sworn a Gadget walked off my Sidebar and across my screen by itself a few days ago.
Ok end of rant. Sorry, had to tell someone about my Gadget woes.
